The September meeting was slightly down on attendance, probably due to Hurricane Ike
predictions, but everyone who did attend had a good time. Judy Hammond from the NWA
Food Bank was at the meeting to talk about the upcoming Empty Bowls soup dinner fund
raiser. She requested some 10-15 bowls from us for the silent auction. I hope that everyone will
take this request seriously, because it is an excellent cause. Any bowl turned between now
and Nov. 7 can be dropped off at the NWA Food Bank office or can be given to Kurt Bird for
collection and delivery to the auction.
A reminder: the Bring Back auction will be held at the October meeting. Don’t forget to bring
Ira Whitacre won the Novice Award for the month. Kurt Bird won the Advanced award.
Congratulations to both!
There were a number of very interesting pieces on display in the Show and Tell. In addition,
the demos were very interesting and well discussed. Kip Powers showed how to dye some
pieces and experimented with a couple of different ideas in the process. Kurt Bird showed
some variations on texturing using the Sorby texturing tool and a chatter tool. Lots of
possibilities for your designs. Harold Stoner discussed the use of a cross slide vise to do
router cutting on pieces in the lathe. Thanks to everyone for their participation in these demos!
Please remember that Mark Ost still has quite a few tools from Ray Tiller’s estate. They will be
for sale at the 4th Saturday meeting.
