Our April 14th meeting featured Jeannie Hulen and Bethany Springer from the Art
Department at the University of Arkansas in Fayatteville. They discussed Form, Function
and Art” as it pertains to the artist or craftsperson. Following the presentation, raffle and
show and tell”, we had a lunch break and then returned for an Open House” session
with demonstrations of turning. Kip Powers turned a bowl, Doug Hyde turned and
decorated some tops, and Mark Ost turned a finial. We had a fine turnout of members,
but few visitors. Bring Back raffle items were won by :Mark Ost, Jerry Crowe, Tom
Gailbreath, Mick Hutchinson, Harold Stoner, Carl Hoyle and Doug Hyde.
The 4th Saturday meeting at Mark Ost’s shop featured a demonstration of Dee Schroeder’
s ornamental lathe. Doug Hyde also demonstrated the turning of lace bobbins.
Pictures of both meetings’ activities can be viewed on our web site.
Our program for the May 12th meeting will be a demonstration by Jerry Browning of Alva,
Oklahoma. Jerry was Bill Koch’s college professor, and is a very active turner. He will
demonstrate a variety of turning techniques, including turning a banksias pod, and a
bowl or vessel, with emphasis on finishing the bottoms of pieces.
Don’t forget to bring your “Show and Tell” pieces to the meeting to share with others.
Also, another reminder, we are still collecting turned toy items for that project. Ray
Weddell would really appreciate some help in providing these items to Andy Hilton for
See you on the 12th!
